I should therefore like to counter Mr Kohlíček’s comments by saying that the former imperial and colonial powers do, of course, have responsibilities, but it must also be said that without the French presence in Africa in the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet Union would have occupied central positions on the continent, and so France prevented these positions from falling under the control of the Communists and their expansionist ideology.
Je voudrais par conséquent rétorquer à M. Kohlíček que, si les anciennes puissances coloniales et impériales ont bien évidemment une responsabilité, il convient de souligner que sans la présence de la France en Afrique dans les années 1970 et 1980, l’Union soviétique aurait occupé des positions centrales sur le continent, et que la France a ainsi empêché que ces positions tombent sous le contrôle des communistes et de leur idéologie expansionniste.
