As a major regional player the European Union (EU) must play its role in protecting this common heritage but its limited resources mean that it cannot act alone.

As regards the derogations in Article 87(3)(b) and (d), it should be pointed out that the aid does not serve to promote the execution of an important project of common European interest or to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy of a Member State and cannot be regarded either as aid to promote culture and heritage conservation.
