This is the continuation of the successful Aid Programme promoting the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community, improving contacts between the two communities and bringing the Turkish Cypriots closer to the EU.

Since 2006, the Commission has invested in an Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot Community to facilitate the unification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community, with particular emphasis on the economic integration of the island, on improving contacts between the two communities and with the EU, and on preparation for the EU acquis following a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.
Depuis 2006, la Commission consacre temps, efforts et ressources dans le cadre du programme d'aide en faveur de la communauté chypriote turque afin de faciliter l'unification de Chypre en encourageant le développement économique de cette communauté, l'accent étant mis en particulier sur l'intégration économique de l'île, l'amélioration des contacts entre les deux communautés et avec l'UE et la préparation en vue de la mise en œuvre de l'acquis dans le sillage d'une solution globale du problème chypriote.

The Council of 26 April 2004, considering that the Turkish Cypriot community had expressed their clear desire for a future within the European Union, recommended that the funds earmarked for the northern part of Cyprus in the event of a settlement should be used to put an end to the isolation of that community and to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community, with particular emphasis on the economic integration of the island and on improving contact between the two communities and with the EU.

The Community shall provide assistance to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community with particular emphasis on the economic integration of the island, on improving contacts between the two communities and with the EU, and on preparation for the acquis communautaire.

The Commission is currently in contact with the Cypriot and Bulgarian authorities on these matters in order to find a solution to the issues raised.

With a view to putting an end to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community and to facilitating the reunification of Cyprus by encouraging the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community, the Council on 26 April also invited the Commission to bring forward comprehensive proposals to this end, with particular emphasis on the economic integration of the island and on improving contact between the two communities and with the EU.

With reference to the Common Resolution on the structured dialogue and its provisions for a specific pre-accession strategy, Commissioner van den BROEK stressed the need for a technical assistance and even closer contacts between the Cypriot authorities and the Commission aiming at intensifying the harmonization efforts of Cyprus with the acquis communautaire.

In this respect, it recalled the recent visit of the Troika to Cyprus and its contacts with the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot community.
