The European Commission has announced today humanitarian assistance of €37.5 million to help people affected by conflict and natural disasters in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan.

The EU's humanitarian support has addressed the most pressing needs of vulnerable populations affected by the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan and its consequences in neighbouring countries, as well as improving local capacities to prevent and respond to the effects of natural disasters and climate change.

It faces a large number of challenges in the fields of security, nuclear proliferation, democratisation, respect for human rights, unemployment and health, fragile situations (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal), large refugee and migratory flows, labour standards, natural disasters and protection of the environment.

In Asian countries € 27 million targeted vulnerable people affected by the Afghan crisis and natural disasters in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan and € 19 million were allocated to help vulnerable populations in Myanmar and Burmese refugees along the Thai-Myanmar border as well as € 19.5 million to South Asian countries, without taking into account disaster preparedness funding, for the recovery of communities affected by floods.

20 % of the budget was allocated to Asia and Latin America in light of the crises and natural disasters which occurred in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Myanmar and Latin America (Peru, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Colombia).

We try to be as objective about our work as possible, but we first of all respond to emergencies, if there's a hurricane, a flood, a drought, or some other natural disaster, or a man-made disaster like Afghanistan, which had both the drought and the conflict. We're trying to rethink this issue.
