G. whereas a large number of detentions where made during peaceful demonstrations in support of the defendants in the Bolotnaya Square case on 21 and 24 February 2014; whereas over 200 people who had gathered outside the Zamoskvoretsky district court on 24 February 2014 to hear the verdict were detained over several hours; whereas opposition leaders Boris Nemtsov and Aleksei Navalny were subsequently sentenced to 10-day jail terms; whereas Aleksei Navalny has been placed under house arrest for the next two months, and on 5 March 2014 was fitted with an electronic bracelet to monitor his activities;

In 1997, the Tribunale di Ferrara (District Court, Ferrara) (Italy) declared that the applicant had failed to make appearance in court and directed that notice should in future be given to the lawyers already appointed by him. By judgment of 2000 of the Tribunale di Ferrara, subsequently upheld by judgment of 2003 of the Corte d’appello di Bologna (Bologna Appeal Court) (Italy), Mr Melloni was sentenced, in his absence, to 10 years’ imprisonment for bankruptcy fraud.

Expresses its deep disappointment with the verdict and the disproportionate sentence issued by the Khamovnichesky District Court in Russia in the case of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevitch, members of the punk band ’Pussy Riot’; notes with concern that this case adds to the recent upsurge in the politically motivated intimidation and prosecution of opposition activists in the Russian Federation, a trend that is of growing concern to the European Union; reaffirms its belief that this sentence will be reviewed and reversed in line with Russia's international commitments;
6. exprime sa profonde déception face au verdict et à la condamnation disproportionnée rendus par le tribunal de district de Khamovnichesky dans l'affaire de Nadejda Tolokonnikova, Maria Aliokhina et Ekaterina Samoutsevitch, membres du groupe punk Pussy Riot; constate avec inquiétude que cette affaire vient s'ajouter à la récente montée brutale dans la Fédération de Russie des intimidations et des persécutions à motifs politiques, une tendance qui nourrit de plus en plus de craintes dans l'Union européenne; réaffirme son espoir que cette condamnation sera réexaminée et modifiée selon les engagements internationaux de la Russie;

Is deeply disappointed with the verdict of the Khamovnichesky District Court in Russia in the case of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich, members of the punk band ‘Pussy Riot’ on 17 August 2012 for ‘hooliganism motivated by religious hatred’; considers the sentence to be shaky in motivation, disproportionate with view to the fact that it was a non violent protest and condemns reports of mistreatment of band members during their pre-trial detention and reported irregularities of the trial; expects that this sentence will be reviewed and reversed in line with Russia’s international commitments;
