As part of the acquisition of joint control over EnBW (a German electricity company) together with OEW in 2001, EDF committed itself to transforming CNR into a totally independent electricity producer and to withdrawing from the operational management of CNR’s power stations and the marketing of the electricity they produce by 1 April 2001.

In the framework of the conclusion of the negotiations on revision of the Cotonou Agreement, on 21 February 2005 the Council committed itself to “maintain its aid effort to the ACP countries at least at the level of the 9th EDF, not including balances; to this should be added the effects of inflation, growth within the European Union, and enlargement to take in 10 new Member States in 2004, based on Community estimates”.
