The EESC opinion on the European Commission's White Paper for adequate, safe and sustainable pensions, drafted by rapporteur Petru Dandea (Workers' Group, Romania) together with co-rapporteur Krzysztof Pater (Various' Interests Group, Poland), considers carefully the range of proposals set out in the Commission document on how Member States can reform their pension systems.

In the EESC opinion on the budget review, drafted by two Frenchmen, Henri Malosse, (Employers' Group) and Gérard Dantin (Workers' Group), the EESC was adamant in arguing for a stronger EU budget, a new system of own resources and the creation of Eurobonds for investment.

Minister Nicolaï, who had outlined the NL Presidency’s policy priorities in a keynote address, was responding to arguments advanced during the debate by the current EESC's Communication Group President, Jillian van Turnhout (Group III, Various interests, Ireland) and confirmed by the EESC's President Roger Briesch, that the EESC, as bridge between Europe and organised civil society, could and should play an important role in informing the European citizen about the draft constitutional treaty.

Many Group II representatives have backed the Euro-demonstration, which lies at the heart of the draft opinion on the new IGC that the EESC plenary assembly adopted by a huge majority at its meeting of 24 September, and have spoken in support of the plan for closer co-operation between the ETUC and the EESC's Employees Group in order to exploit all the synergies possible, both on the key social issues in Europe and on the EU's imminent enlargement and external relations.
En partageant cette démarche, qui est aussi à la base du projet d'avis sur la nouvelle CIG que l'assemblée du CESE a approuvé à une large majorité pendant la séance du 24 septembre 2003, de nombreux représentants du Groupe sont intervenus pour soutenir le projet d'une coopération plus étroite entre la CES et le Groupe « Salariés » du CESE, afin d'exploiter toutes les synergies possibles tant sur les grands dossiers sociaux de l'Europe que dans la perspective de l'élargissement imminent ou encore dans les relations extérieures de l'Union.
