The European Commission announced today the launching of a new civil protection programme in the Mediterranean region, building on the achievements of the successful Euro-Mediterranean Regional Programme for the Prevention, Preparedness and Response to natural and man-made disasters (PPRD).

Today, the inhabitants of this and the other benefiting communities of the programme have a source of clean and sustainable energy, access to new technologies as well as dedicated training and continuous support leading to the result that the new users can profit in an ideal way, sustainable and adapted to their culture, from everything the EURO-SOLAR programme can offer its communities regarding local and integrated development.

On 1st December Commissioner Hedegaard, together with his Excellency Jorge Valdez, Ambassador of Peru to the European Union, will participate in a video conference in Brussels with representatives of the Sancayuni in Peru, a local community based on an island of the Titicaca Lake and benefiting from the EURO-SOLAR Programme.
Le 1er décembre 2010, la commissaire à l’action pour le climat, Mme Connie Hedegaard, et l’ambassadeur du Pérou auprès de l’Union européenne, M. Jorge Váldez, participeront à Bruxelles à une vidéoconférence avec des représentants de la communauté de Sancayuni, au Pérou. Cette communauté, établie sur une île du lac Titicaca, bénéficie du programme EURO-SOLAR.

Other important project under the 2005 regional strategy are: the support to the Anna Lindh Foundation (€5 million), a €5 million contribution to the Euro-MED Youth Programme, a new €10 million contribution for Middle East Peace Projects, and support to various New Neighbourhood Initiatives such as the promotion of a Euro-MED airspace (€5 million), a joint Israel-Palestine transport office (€2 million), a project that promotes co-operation between local authorities on both side of the Mediterranean (MED-PACT, €5 million) and a new transnational-cross border programme (€9.4 million).
D’autres projets importants s’inscrivant dans la stratégie régionale pour 2005 concernent un soutien de 5 millions d’euros à la Fondation Anna Lindh, une contribution de 5 millions d’euros au programme Euro-Med Jeunesse, une nouvelle contribution de 10 millions d’euros en faveur de projets relatifs au processus de paix au Proche-Orient et le soutien à différentes nouvelles initiatives en matière de voisinage, comme la promotion d’un espace aérien Euro-Med (5 millions d’euros), un office des transports commun Israël-Palestine (2 millions d’euros), un projet de promotion de la coopération entre les autorités locales sur les deux rives de la Méditerranée (MED-PACT, 5 millions d’euros) et un nouveau programme transfrontalier (9,4 millions d’euros).

Alongside this there would be the need for other initiatives, involving introducing a global anti-drugs plan, launching a EURO-LATIN-FOR programme to train members of the judiciary and the police, together with a EURO-LATIN-LEX programme to establish the legal framework required to ensure that drug trafficking and related offences are suitably prosecuted, and setting up a bi-regional solidarity fund.
Conjointement à ces actions, les autres initiatives qui s'imposent sont l'établissement d'un plan global de lutte contre la drogue; la mise en œuvre d'un programme EURO-LATIN-FOR pour la formation des membres des autorités judiciaires et policières et un programme EURO-LATIN-LEX sur le cadre juridique nécessaire pour la poursuite judiciaire effective des délits en ce qui concerne le trafic de drogue et les activités connexes ainsi que la création d'un Fonds de solidarité bi-régional.
