The European Community Ship owners' Associations (ECSA) welcomes the Commission proposal, but believes "that it would not be conducive to include elements going beyond the IMO requirements as this will cause confusion and thus adversely affect the efforts undertaken for improving ship recycling practices and conditions".
L'Association des armateurs de la Communauté européenne (ECSA) se félicite de la proposition de la Commission mais estime "qu'elle ne serait pas favorable à l'inclusion d'éléments allant au-delà des prescriptions de l'OMI car cela serait source de confusion et nuirait donc aux efforts entrepris pour améliorer les pratiques et conditions de recyclage des navires".

Your Rapporteur has taken into consideration the discussions held during the Workshop organised by the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection on 11 December 2008 as well as the input received by several stakeholders, institutions and academia, such as CEN (European Committee for Standarisation), CEMA (European Committee of Associations of Manufacturers of Agricultural Machinery), Pesticide Action Network-Europe, Orgalime (The European Engineering Industries Association), Julius Kühn-Institute-Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants (JKI-Germany) and the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Informatics of the University of Agriculture in Krakow.

With regard to our discussion today on the European Free Trade Association agreement and the impact it will have on the shipbuilding industry, I believe it is important to note that for Canada's most sensitive shipbuilding products, which include ferries and offshore supply vessels, tugs and pusher craft, dredgers and salvage ships, and light vessels, there will be a 15-year phase-out of Canada's existing 25% tariff.
