The Commission will also create a "European Forum on Forward Looking Activities" bringing together existing studies and data and involving public and private stakeholders to improve the evidence base of policies.

In order to increase the availability of information on the use of medicinal products in the paediatric population, and to avoid unnecessary repetition of studies in the paediatric population which do not add to the collective knowledge, the European database provided for in Article 11 of Directive 2001/20/EC should include a European register of clinical trials of medicinal products for paediatric use comprising all ongoing, prematurely terminated, and completed paediatric studies conducted both in the Community and in third countries.
Afin d'améliorer la disponibilité d'informations sur l'usage pédiatrique des médicaments et d'éviter la répétition inutile d'études pédiatriques qui n'ajoutent rien au savoir collectif, la base européenne de données prévue à l'article 11 de la directive 2001/20/CE devrait comprendre un registre européen des essais cliniques portant sur les médicaments à usage pédiatrique qui garde trace de toutes les études pédiatriques en cours, achevées ou auxquelles il a été mis fin prématurément, menées tant dans la Communauté que dans des pays tiers.

Public health threats from the use of untested medicinal products in the paediatric population can be safely addressed through the study of medicinal products for the paediatric population, which should be carefully controlled and monitored through the specific requirements for the protection of the paediatric population who take part in clinical trials in the Community laid down in Directive 2001/20/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 4 April 2001 on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States relating to the implementation of good clinical practice in the conduct of clinical trials on medicinal products for human use
Il peut être remédié en toute sécurité aux risques que l'usage de médicaments non testés auprès de la population pédiatrique représente pour la santé publique en procédant à l'étude de médicaments destinés à cette population. Ces médicaments devraient être rigoureusement contrôlés et surveillés par l'application des exigences spécifiques visant à protéger la population pédiatrique qui participe à des essais cliniques dans la Communauté, énoncées dans la directive 2001/20/CE du Parlement européen et du Conseil du 4 avril 2001 concernant le rapprochement des dispositions législatives, réglementaires et administratives des États membres relatives à l'application de bonnes pratiques cliniques dans la conduite d'essais cliniques de médicaments à usage humain

Finally, the European scientific community is in the forefront of methodological research in population-based epidemiology and public health, from analysis and projection of incidence and mortality trends, to survival analysis, prevalence estimation, planning and conduction of high resolution studies, and for the study of social and economic inequalities on health.

The first results of the study on islands are as follows: 10 million Europeans live in 286 European islands, out of which 9,5 million in the Mediterranean (Sicily, Crete, the Balearics and Corsica); 87 % of the EU island population is covered by Objective 1; islands with the smallest population (less than 5000 inhabitants) face most difficulties.
