– (FR) During the vote on Thursday 20 May on the report by the socialist MEP, Liem Hoang Ngoc, on the long-term sustainability of public finances, the UMP and Modem groups in the European Parliament voted enthusiastically for a text which the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe had amended line by line in order to turn it into a neoliberal manifesto.

I believe that Europe should now seize the chance to abandon the received idea that because the European Parliament represents European citizens, the national parliaments must be less enthusiastic Europeans and hotbeds of resistance to Europe.
Je trouve que c'est une chance pour l'Europe que l'on en finisse avec l'idée reçue selon laquelle parce que le Parlement européen représente les citoyens européens, les parlements nationaux seraient forcément des Européens moins fervents et des foyers de résistance à l'Europe.

Emphasis must be laid on the enthusiastic support given to the programme by the European Parliament, which played a highly active part in the negotiations.
