Additional measures would enhance the visibility of the European political parties during the whole electoral process, from the campaign to the casting of votes, and enable them to efficiently bridge the divide between politics and citizens of the Union, complementing the information obligation foreseen for European political parties by the Commission proposal for a Regulation on the statute and funding of European political parties and European political foundations.

I hope, therefore, that after this first Commission communication, the Commission will present Parliament with a strategic programme, with the necessary legislative package, with more time for the Commission and more time for Parliament, but I also hope that, during this legislature, the internal market will become a reality and that, in becoming a reality, it will do so to the benefit of the citizens and the workers and that it will allow for the continued consolidation of this European social model, which I would say at the moment is the envy of those countries which do not belong to the European Union.
J’espère donc qu’après cette première communication de la Commission, la Commission présentera au Parlement un programme stratégique, doté d’un cadre législatif nécessaire, avec plus de temps pour la Commission et le Parlement, mais j’espère aussi qu’au long de cette législature, le marché intérieur deviendra une réalité et qu’en devenant une réalité, il profitera au citoyen, aux travailleurs et il permettra de poursuivre la consolidation du modèle social européen qui, à mon avis, fait actuellement envie aux pays qui n’appartiennent pas à l’Union européenne.

As regards the arrangements for attendance at the Conference, the Council agreed on a formula that will in substance mean that, in addition to the twelve Mediterranean partners identified by the Essen European Council as participants, Mauritania, the Arab Maghreb Union and the Arab League could attend as special guests and that the Ambassadors of certain third countries (CCEE, United States, Russia, Albania, Slovenia, the Holy See and possibly others) would be invited to be present on a diplomatic platform during the formal part of the Conference.
En ce qui concerne les modalités de présence à cette Conférence, le Conseil a marqué son accord sur une formule qui prévoit en substance que - en plus des douze partenaires méditerranéens identifiés par le Conseil européen d'Essen comme participants - la Mauritanie, l'Union du Maghreb arabe et la Ligue arabe peuvent assister comme invités spéciaux et que les Ambassadeurs de certains pays tiers (PECO, Etats-Unis, Russie, Albanie, Slovénie, Saint- Siège et possiblement d'autres) soient invités à être présents sur une tribune diplomatique à la partie solennelle de la Conférence.
