IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS

While the Union is already in a position to grant support of a macro-financial nature to Member States, and to express European solidarity to disaster-stricken regions through the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) established by Council Regulation (EC) No 2012/2002 , there is currently no appropriate instrument available at Union level to address on a sufficiently predictable and independent basis the humanitarian needs of disaster-stricken people within the Union, such as food assistance, emergency healthcare, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, protection and education.
Bien que l'Union soit déjà en mesure d'accorder un soutien de type macrofinancier aux États membres et d'exprimer la solidarité européenne aux régions sinistrées par l'intermédiaire du Fonds de solidarité de l'Union européenne institué par le règlement (CE) no 2012/2002 du Conseil , elle ne dispose actuellement d'aucun instrument approprié pour répondre de manière suffisamment prévisible et indépendante aux besoins humanitaires des populations victimes de catastrophes dans l'Union, tels que l'aide alimentaire, les soins de santé d'urgence, la fourniture d'abris, l'approvisionnement en eau, l'assainissement et l'hygiène, la protection et l'éducation.

Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn has welcomed the European Parliament's vote today to endorse reform of the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF), strengthening the EU’s response to natural disasters across European regions.

This special report (SR 24/2012) entitled “The European Union Solidarity Fund’s response to the 2009 Abruzzi earthquake: The relevance and cost of operations”examined whether (i) the expenditure provided for in the Implementation Agreement was compliant with the EUSF Regulation, (ii) whether the CASE (Italian acronym for “Complessi Abitativi Antisismici ed Ecosostenibili”, i.e. seismically isolated and environmentally sustainable housing) project was well planned and rapidly implemented and (iii) whether the CASE project was implemented in the most economical fashion.
