More than that, the film pays homage to the 12 men of Lower Canada who met their deaths on the scaffold at the hands of the vengeful British conquerors, and to all the other men and women who were victims of shame and ostracism, those who fought and were wounded or killed on the battlefield, those who languished in English jails or in cruel exile for daring to hold high the torch of freedom, justice and democracy.
Mais il s'agit surtout d'un hommage à ces 12 hommes qui, au Bas-Canada, auront péri sur l'échafaud, victimes de la main vengeresse du conquérant britannique, de même qu'à celles et ceux qui ont subi l'opprobre et l'ostracisme, qui ont combattu, sont tombés ou ont été blessés sur les champs de bataille, qui ont croupi dans les geôles anglaises ou qui ont connu la meurtrissure cruelle de l'exil pour avoir brandi bien haut le flambeau de la liberté, de la justice et de la démocratie.
