I have been quite active with groups in Winnipeg that are looking at emerging markets in the Far East in particular.

These companies, which include the Yorkshire Group in the United Kingdom and the Swiss firms Ciba and Clariant, as well as BASF and DyStar, are facing mounting competitive pressure from manufacturers in the Far East, and this trend is likely to continue in the next few years.

On the other hand though, the proposal to produce annual reports on the European Union’s relations with Macao, which has been put forward by the Commission and which should also be welcomed, should not preclude the European Parliament itself from paying the closest attention to the matter, particularly by following its development from 20 December. It could do this by broadening the exchange of information and interinstitutional cooperation in this area, by creating its own interconnecting contact group, by analysing and debating the periodical reports that are presented to it, in short, by studying the development of all aspects of Macao’s overall situation. This should be done in view of the transformations in international relations in the Far East and in view of the changes due to take place in this area, not forgetting the new situations which will eventually result from China’s entry into the WTO and by the development and/or qualitative change in its relationship with the United States of America.
Par ailleurs, le dessein manifesté par la Commission, qu'il faut également saluer, visant l'élaboration de rapports annuels sur les relations de l'Union européenne avec Macao ne devrait pas dispenser le Parlement européen d'accorder, lui-même, toute son attention à la question, en suivant spécialement son évolution à partir du 20 décembre, en affinant à cet égard l'échange d'informations et la coopération interinstitutionnelle, en créant son propre groupe de contact, de liaison, en analysant et discutant les rapports périodiques qui lui seront présentés, en appréciant enfin l'évolution de tous les aspects de la conjoncture liée à Macao dans la perspective des transformations des relations internationales en Extrême-Orient et des modifications qui s'annoncent dans cette zone, sans oublier les situations nouvelles éventuellement impliquées par l'arrivée de la Chine au sein de l'OMC et par l'évolution et/ou la modification qualitative de ses relations avec les États-Unis d'Amérique.
