Today, we are specifically commemorating Jean Monnet, the first thinker, or can I say the first dreamer, of a unified Europe, the architect of the Schuman plan, and the initial founder of the present European Union.

Likewise, for the first time pluridisciplinary and transnational activities were realised in 1992 with the organisation of the first Jean Monnet symposium in Seville on the theme "Towards a European Citizenship?", which was followed in 1993 by a second symposium in Tübingen on the theme of "Federalism: Traditions and Perspectives".

The 1996 selection brings the number of universities involved in the Jean Monnet Project in these two countries to 33 (8 in Hungary, 25 in Poland) and brings the total number of Jean Monnet initiatives in Hungary and Poland to 258 - 23 Jean Monnet Chairs (9 in European Community Law, 11 in European Economic Integration, 2 in European Integration - Political Science Issues and 1 in the History of European Integration), 101 Permanent Courses and European Modules, 41 Research Projects, 76 grants for teaching materials, 14 Doctoral grants and 3 awards for complementary initiatives linked to 1993- 1995 Chairs (introduced for the first time in the framework of the 1996/1997 programme for Hungary).
Suite à la sélection 1996, l'Action Jean Monnet sera présente dans 33 universités de ces deux pays (8 en Hongrie et 25 en Pologne) et comportera un nombre total de 258 initiatives Jean Monnet en Pologne et Hongrie - 23 Chaires Jean Monnet (9 en Droit communautaire, 11 en Intégration économique européenne, 2 en Etudes Politiques européennes et 1 en Histoire de la construction européenne), 101 Cours permanents et Modules européens, 41 Projets de recherche, 76 aides matérielles, 14 bourses de doctorat et 3 initiatives complémentaires liées aux Chaires 1993-1995 (formule introduite pour la première fois dans le cadre du programme 1996-1997 pour la Hongrie).

Creation of the first 7 European Jean Monnet "Chairs" in central Europe Launch of 19 permanent courses on European integration starting in October 1993. Given the increasing need for knowledge on EC issues and in the perspective of possible future Community membership, the Polish and Hungarian authorities wished to allocate a part of their National PHARE programme to the setting up of a Jean Monnet Project for Poland and Hungary (1993-1995) from the start of the University year next October.

According to the same procedure adopted for the selection of successful universities in the first year of the Jean Monnet Project for Poland and Hungary, the European University Council for the Jean Monnet Project1 met in Brussels on 30 June 1994 to examine the 201 applications, of which 185 were submitted by Polish universities and 16 were submitted by Hungarian universities.
S'appuyant sur la même procédure de sélection que pour les pays membres, le Conseil universitaire européen pour l'Action Jean Monnet1 a examiné lors de sa réunion du 30 juin 1994 les 201 candidatures dont 185 en provenance d'universités polonaises et 16 d'universités hongroises.
