– (FR) Mr President, Mr Barroso, Mr Rehn, I genuinely hope that you will look at the work done by the European Parliament on the subjects we have been dealing with today – the Berès report and the Feio report – because, of course, we are now working as colegislators on economic governance. I can tell you that together with four pro-European groups in Parliament at least, we have made a genuine effort to work on compromises that will achieve something.

We must encourage the leaders of political parties fighting to be represented in the parliament to form a strong pro-European front, so we can count on a good partner for the next four years.

7. Supports the general tone of the European Commission report, welcoming in particular the attempt by the European Commission to define what would be a sustainable tax cut through four criteria : budgetary position 'close-to-balance or in surplus', no pro-cyclical measures, account must be taken of the level of government debt and long-term budget sustainability, and tax reform should form part of a comprehensive reform package (i.e. to improve incentives for employment and entrepreneurial activity);
