– (DE) Mr President, on behalf of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats I would like to ask you, pursuant to Article 151(1) and (3), to reject Amendment 45a, tabled by the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, as inadmissible insofar as it deals with the statement made by Pope Benedict for the following reasons.
– (DE) Monsieur le Président, au nom du groupe du Parti populaire européen (Démocrates-chrétiens) et des Démocrates européens, je voudrais vous demander, conformément à l’article 151, paragraphes 1 et 3, du règlement, de rejeter l’amendement 45 bis, proposé par le groupe Alliance des démocrates et des libéraux pour l’Europe, comme irrecevable dans la mesure où il traite de la déclaration du pape Benoît XVI, pour les raisons suivantes.

Hon. Jerahmiel S. Grafstein: Honourable senators, I rise to pay respects to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. As a student of the church, always rich in symbolism, to take the mantle of St. Benedict, the patron saint of Europe, offers interesting insight into the Pope's stewardship in the future direction of the church.
L'honorable Jerahmiel S. Grafstein : Honorables sénateurs, je tiens à rendre hommage à sa sainteté le pape Benoît XVI. Je m'intéresse à l'Église, dont le symbolisme est toujours très riche, et je vois dans la décision du nouveau pape de revêtir le manteau de Saint Benoît — saint patron de l'Europe — un signe de la façon dont le pontife entend mener son sacerdoce et diriger l'Église dans l'avenir.
