The European Commission decided today to grant Hungary a three-year extension of its transitional period for the acquisition of agricultural land by non-resident EU citizens and all legal entities, following a request by Hungary on 10 September 2010.
La Commission européenne a décidé aujourd'hui de prolonger de trois ans, à la suite d'une demande présentée par la Hongrie le 10 septembre 2010, la période transitoire dont bénéficie ce pays concernant l'acquisition de terres agricoles par des personnes physiques qui ne sont pas résidentes en Hongrie ou qui n'ont pas la nationalité hongroise, d'une part, et par des personnes morales, d'autre part.

The main reason for granting Hungary the transitional period upon accession was the need to safeguard the socio-economic conditions for agricultural activities following the introduction of the single market and the transition to the Common Agricultural Policy.

As for Hungary, the Council has just granted a loan of EUR 6.5 billion in the framework of the mechanism for medium-term financial assistance for balances of payments. In addition to the Council’s loan, there are loans from the International Monetary Fund, for EUR 12.5 billion, and from the World Bank, for one billion.
