Twenty years ago, in response to foreign competition and the signing of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, Canadian winemakers made significant ambitious innovative changes. They pulled out all the vines that they had planted and replaced them with higher quality grape vines; established vintner quality assurance standards and met them; developed a wine country tourism, which we call agri-tourism; and promoted icewine and made Canada well known globally for its icewine.
