The association of tomato producers in Serres has written to the Community officials responsible for carrying out checks on industrial tomatoes in the Serres region (Pilar Ramírez and Frederico Spanu) to complain that the companies, AXACO and ARGO, with the complicity of Greek government departments and the banks, made it appear that they had processed many times more than the actual amounts of industrial tomatoes in order to obtain Community subsidies illegally for the non-existent quantities.

What is the Commission's official position on this entire matter and in what way might it intercede with the Greek Government, which appears determined to proceed with the project, despite protests from within Greece and abroad, as evidenced by the statement issued by Cambridge University's Department of Classical Studies calling for respect for the remains of mankind's past in this particularly fragile area?
La Commission européenne pourrait-elle indiquer quelle est la position officielle qu'elle défend en la matière et comment elle compte éventuellement intervenir auprès du gouvernement grec qui semble résolu à laisser poursuivre, malgré tout, la construction de l'ouvrage, en dépit de l'opposition qui se fait jour tant à l'intérieur de la Grèce qu'à l'étranger comme l'indique par ailleurs la communication du département des études classiques de l'université de Cambridge qui réclame la préservation des vestiges du passé de l'homme dans cette zone particulièrement sensible?

Turkey has, de facto, challenged the sovereign rights of Greece by intercepting Greek aircraft taking part in NATO's exercise, Destined Glory, its failure to respect the Greek ten-mile FIR and the air corridors over the islands of Limnos and Ikaria, ignoring the opinions of NATO's legal service, and departing from the plans for the exercise drawn up by NATO's administration, which prompted the Greek Government to withdraw its troops.

In the light of this, what is the Commission’s view of the failure to complete the project? Has it been asked by the Greek Government for the commitment of appropriations from the Urban Development subprogramme for the Thessaloniki underground railway under the second CSF which is, of course, expiring? Has the transfer agreement to the second Thessaloniki underground rail contractor been registered with the Community institutions’ departments and is it consistent with the requirements of public contract-awarding and also with Community legislation? In the context of the investigations which the European Ombudsman is conducting, has the file of complaints examined concerning the Thessaloniki underground railway revealed any liability on the part of the Commission?
