According to a study by Carles Ibáñez Martí, the Ebro delta is one of the areas worst affected by the build-up of river sediment. The study estimates that the reservoirs in the river catchment area, which number almost 200, are the cause of the build-up of more than 99% of the sediment once carried down the river (Guillén y Palanques 1992, Ibáñez et al. 1996).
