Reiterates its support for the initiatives and activities undertaken by FRONTEX and requests that it monitor, on an ongoing basis, the impact of illegal immigration on island communities; calls on the Commission and on FRONTEX to take prompt action in support of islands so as to alleviate the immediate pressure to deal with this problem whilst ensuring due respect for human rights; calls on the Council and the Commission to ensure that the requisite resources are made available for fast and effective action; emphasises, further, the importance of stronger and closer coordination and cooperation between the islands, and the need for greater involvement on the part of these regions in combating illegal immigration;

For that reason, so that they can carry out the appropriate measures, the Member States should have at their disposal sums equivalent to the support already granted by the Community under Council Regulation (EC) No 1452/2001 of 28 June 2001 introducing specific measures for certain agricultural products for the French overseas departments (Poseidom) , Council Regulation (EC) No 1453/2001 and Council Regulation (EC) No 1454/2001 of 28 June 2001 introducing specific measures for certain agricultural products for the Canary Islands (Poseican) and sums granted to farmers established in those regions under Council Regulation (EC) No 1254/1999 of 17 May 1999 on the common organisation of the market in beef and veal , Council Regulation (EC) No 2529/2001 of 19 December 2001 on the common organisation of the market in sheepmeat and goatmeat , Council Regulation (EC) No 1784/2003 of 29 September 2003 on the common organisation of the market in cereals and sums granted for the supply of rice to the French overseas department of Réunion under Article 5 of Council Regulation (EC) No 1785/2003 of 29 September 2003 on the common organisation of the market in rice .

With regard to the issue regarding the geographic circumstances of the island regions, the Council does agree, and has expressed itself to that effect on several occasions including through relevant legislation, that these circumstances deserve special attention within the context of all Community transport policy initiatives, whenever appropriate; for example, the Council conclusions of 7/8 June 1993 on the Commission's previous White Paper on Transport Policy refer explicitly to this issue.
