Additional conferences were attended by Scientific Council members and ERCEA staff, where an ERC stand or session was organised to inform of ERC funding opportunities: the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) conference held in Dublin, the Lindau Nobel Laureates’ meeting, the Nature Jobs Career Fair, the World Congress of Political Sciences and the European Congress of Mathematics, to name but a few.

It seeks synergy with other institutionalised political dialogues to which the EU or its Member States are party (e.g. the EU-Rio Group Ministerial Meetings and the Ibero-American Summits). This should help boost the EU-Latin America alliance.

While I know that the President of Parliament, Mr Borrell, will attend the Ibero-American Summit in Salamanca and that the dictator Fidel Castro has not been excluded from appearing in that city in the flesh, I would like to ask Mr Borrell to communicate the European Union and our Parliament’s final position to the Cuban delegates: the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners in Cuba.

Calls on the competent bodies within the European Parliament, the national parliaments of the Member States and the American Congress to make the most of their various channels of communication and opportunities for meeting to encourage the prevention of Euro-American crises, notably by explaining to American Congressmen and Senators that the same political objectives (e.g. the fight against State terrorism or the defence of human rights) can be pursued by different and equally legitimate means (a hard policy of sanctions or a policy of cooperation compelling the target to behave more transparently);
