The promotion of decent work has been at the heart of the ILO’s policy agenda since the year 2000: in its decent work agenda, the ILO proposes giving all men and women real opportunities to acquire decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity.

As regards night-time working by pregnant women and women who have recently given birth, the Commission proposal adopts the wording of the very recent ILO convention agreed by both sides of industry and representatives of 11 of the 12 Member States in June this year, the 12th having abstained. The key idea of this provision is that the Member States must take measures to ensure that there is an alternative to night-time working for women who would otherwise be required to perform such work for a period of at least 16 weeks before and after giving birth to a child, including at least eight weeks before the presumed date of delivery.
