In October 2001, we learned of the DFO’s Arctic Science program’s effort to secure an icebreaker which had been declared surplus to the needs of the Canadian Coast Guard ([39]) There were many reasons given for acquiring a vessel dedicated to serving the research needs of the Arctic science research community, including: the increasing demands for Arctic science in Canada and among other polar nations; the valuable information it could provide Canada in advancing its resource conservation efforts; the huge international demand for research platforms capable of working safely in the Arctic; and the many partners (e.g., northern agencies, universities, and other governments) that are ready to sign on.
