Hon. Linda Frum: Honourable senators, I rise to inform the Senate that we are in the midst of the annual Iran Accountability Week and to speak about an imprisoned Iranian named Jafar Panahi with whom I am paired as a parliamentarian through the Global Iranian Political Prisoner Advocacy Project.

O. whereas a six-year prison sentence, confirmed on appeal, has been imposed on the prominent Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi; whereas the sentence of one year's imprisonment and 90 lashes was given to prominent actress Marzieh Vafamehr, following her involvement in a film depicting the difficult conditions in which artists operate in Iran; . whereas on 17 September 2011 the Iranian authorities detained six independent documentary filmmakers, Mohsen Shahrnazdar, Hadi Afarideh, Katayoun Shahabi, Naser Safarian, Shahnam Bazdar and Mojtaba Mir Tahmaseb, accusing them of working for the BBC's Persian Service and engaging in espionage on behalf of that news service;

L. whereas the 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to two Iranian activists, the lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and the film director Jafar Panahi; whereas Nasrin Sotoudeh and Jafar Panahi are both serving jail sentences for their work to highlight human rights abuses in Iran; whereas Ms Sotoudeh has embarked on a hunger strike after being refused family visits;

L. whereas the 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to two Iranian activists, the lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and the film director Jafar Panahi; whereas Nasrin Sotoudeh is serving a jail sentence for her work to highlight human rights abuses in Iran and has embarked on a hunger strike after being refused family visits; whereas Jafar Panahi is appealing a six-year jail sentence, a 20-year ban on film-making and a travel ban imposed on him;
L. considérant que le prix Sakharov pour la liberté de l'esprit a été décerné en 2012 à deux militants iraniens, l'avocate Nasrin Sotoudeh et le réalisateur Jafar Panahi; que Nasrin Sotoudeh purge une peine de prison pour avoir dénoncé des violations des droits de l'homme en Iran et a commencé une grève de la faim après s'être vu refuser la visite de sa famille; que Jafar Panahi a interjeté appel contre une condamnation à son encontre à une peine d'emprisonnement de 6 ans, une interdiction de réaliser des films pendant 20 ans et une interdiction de voyager;

6. Urges the Iranian authorities to release all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, including Nasrin Sotoudeh, co-Sakharov Prize winner together with Jafar Panahi, and to allow them to come to the European Parliament in December 2012 to collect their prizes; expresses its concern about the deteriorating health condition of Nasrin Sotoudeh; calls on Iran’s judiciary and prison authorities to end the mistreatment of Nasrin Sotoudeh; expresses its sympathy and full solidarity with the requests of Nasrin Sotoudeh; calls on Iran’s authorities to allow all prisoners access to lawyers of their choice, necessary medical care and family visits, to which they are entitled under international human rights law, and to treat them with dignity and respect;
6. presse les autorités iraniennes de libérer tous les prisonniers politiques et prisonniers de conscience, notamment Nasrin Sotoudeh, co-lauréate du Prix Sakharov avec Jafar Panahi, et de les autoriser à se rendre au Parlement européen en décembre 2012 pour recevoir leur prix; exprime son inquiétude devant la détérioration de l'état de santé de Nasrin Sotoudeh; demande aux autorités judiciaires et pénitentiaires d'Iran de cesser tout mauvais traitement à son égard; exprime sa sympathie et sa plein solidarité au sujet des demandes de Nasrin Sotoudeh; invite les autorités iraniennes à accorder aux prisonniers un accès à l'avocat de leur choix, à des soins médicaux nécessaires et aux visites de leurs proches, auquel ils ont droit selon le droit international dans le domaine des droits de l'homme, et à les traiter avec dignité et respect;
