A. whereas the Turkish police used excessive violence – with the approval of the political authorities – following the legal and peaceful reaction on Friday, 31 May 2013 by the people of Istanbul to the construction project in Istanbul Taksim Gezi Park (the planned construction of the Taksim military barracks and a shopping centre);
A. considérant que la police turque a, le vendredi 31 mai 2013, fait usage, avec l'accord des autorités politiques, de violence excessive face à la réaction, légale et pacifique, des habitants d'Istanbul s'opposant au projet de construction des casernes militaires de Taksim et d'un centre commercial sur le site du parc Gezi, sur la place Taksim, à Istanbul;

A. whereas in the early hours of Friday, 31 May 2013 the Turkish police used excessive violence in an effort to disperse a group of demonstrators, who had been protesting for weeks against the planned felling of trees for a new construction project in Istanbul’s Gezi Park in the Taksim Square area;
A. considérant qu'aux premières heures du vendredi 31 mai 2013, la police turque a fait usage d'une violence excessive en vue de disperser un groupe de manifestants qui protestaient depuis plusieurs semaines contre l'abattage d'arbres auquel il était prévu de procéder afin de permettre un nouveau projet immobilier dans le parc Gezi d'Istanbul, dans le quartier de la place Taksim;

2. Expresses its deep concern at the disproportionate and excessive use of force by the Turkish police in its response to the peaceful and legitimate protests in Istanbul’s Gezi Park, and calls on the Turkish authorities to thoroughly investigate the police violence, to bring those responsible to justice and to offer compensation to the victims; warns the Turkish Government against taking harsh measures against the peaceful protesters, and urges the Prime Minister to take a unifying and conciliatory position so as to avoid any further escalation;
2. fait part de sa profonde inquiétude face au recours disproportionné et excessif à la force par la police turque en réponse aux manifestations pacifiques et légitimes du parc Gezi d'Istanbul et appelle les autorités turques à enquêter de manière approfondie sur les violences policières, à traduire les responsables en justice et à proposer de dédommager les victimes; met en garde le gouvernement turc contre l'adoption de mesures sévères à l'encontre des manifestants pacifiques et exhorte le premier ministre à adopter une position d'unité et de conciliation afin d'éviter toute aggravation de la situation;

Strongly condemns the disproportionate and excessive use of force by the Turkish police in its response to the peaceful and legitimate protests in Istanbul’s Gezi Park, and calls on the Turkish authorities to thoroughly investigate the police violence and bring those responsible to justice; warns the Turkish government against taking harsh measures against the protesters, and urges the Prime Minister to take a unifying and conciliatory position so as to avoid any further escalation;

The resulting tensions and frustration eventually peaked in May and June around a controversial urban development project in Gezi Park in Istanbul and overflowed into major protests in many other cities.

However, the handling of demonstrations in response to the proposed development of Gezi Park in Istanbul raised serious concerns and underlined the need for the EU to remain the anchor for reform.
