This text was condemned not only by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, the International Human Rights Federation, the European Trade Union Confederation, the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community and the fledgling Latin American democracies but also by eminent figures who are least likely to be suspected of excessive severity towards the European Union, such as Jacques Delors.

I propose that this should also include the Latin American governments who are looking for the same position about the violations in Cuba, to press for some kind of economic reform or political reform in Cuba.

The Committee will press ahead with its work of fostering regular contacts with civil society representatives from the Latin American and Caribbean countries and, in each of these countries and regions, of helping consolidate civil society and establish or strengthen consultation mechanisms.
