– (EL) The Greek Communist Party abstained from the vote on the joint resolution by the political groups (Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, Union for Europe of the Nations Group and Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left) on the establishment of common international standards for the import, export and transfer of conventional weapons because:

Calls on Libya to liberate all political prisoners; is deeply concerned by Libyan legislation which bans political parties, associations and media; emphasises the importance of respecting international human rights and humanitarian conventions; calls on the EU to urge the Libyan authorities to grant international human rights organisations permission to enter Libya and to carry out investigations; calls on Libya to allow access for international monitors, to end arbitrary expulsions and arrests of migrants, to ratify the Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and to recognise the mandate of the UNHCR;

Does the minister, who has special responsibility for literacy, believe that the increased cost of books is a barrier to improving literacy levels, and does she stand by her party's commitment, expressed so passionately at Liberal Party conventions and in Liberal Party propaganda sheets, that books should not be taxed?
Est-ce que la ministre, qui est chargée spécialement de l'alphabétisation, estime que le prix majoré des livres est un obstacle à l'alphabétisation et souscrit à l'engagement de son parti, qui a été exprimé avec tant de passion lors des congrès du Parti libéral et dans les tracts de propagande du Parti libéral, à savoir qu'on ne devrait pas taxer les livres?

On behalf of the Group of the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party, I would also call upon the Council to support the drawing up of protocols to the Convention Against Torture, as well as to support a new international convention concerning those who have disappeared.
Je voudrais également demander au Conseil, au nom du groupe libéral, de soutenir, d'une part, l'élaboration de protocoles à la Convention contre la torture, et d'autre part une nouvelle convention internationale sur les disparitions de personnes.

I was at the last Liberal Party convention as was the member. I remember a resolution being passed by the Liberal Party of Canada which strongly urged the federal government to recognize same sex marriages in the same way that it recognizes opposite marriages in its distribution of benefits.
J'étais au congrès libéral, tout comme le député, et je me souviens d'avoir entendu une résolution qui a été adoptée par le Parti libéral du Canada et qui exhortait fermement le gouvernement fédéral à reconnaître les mariages entre partenaires de même sexe de la même manière qu'il reconnaît les mariages entre les partenaires de sexe différent dans la répartition des avantages.
