We should also remember that it was this government that eliminated the research tools and instruments grants program, put a moratorium on the major resources support program of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, cut funding for the PEARL research station in the high Arctic, cut the centres of excellence budget by 17% and made the irresponsible decision to abolish funding for the experimental lakes program, a world-renowned research program.

I particularly condemn the abolition of the experimental lakes program run by the Freshwater Institute in northern Ontario, and of the MRS program, as well as the research, technology and instrumentation grants program run by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Recalls that the European Research Council (ERC) has proved to be successful in promoting scientific excellence and a strengthening element of the ERA; calls for further improvements to the ERA's structures and mechanisms and a boost to its instruments; stresses the need to substantially increase the proportion of the budget dedicated to grants both to young and female researchers, and to researchers from innovative SMEs (both research groups and individuals), as well to strengthen Marie Curie actions and initiatives, thus reinforcing mobility (by introducing a ‘fifth freedom’ of knowledge), career progression and collaboration between academia, public research institutes and industry, as well as access to major research infrastructures; calls on industry to become more involved in doctoral and postdoctoral research programmes; calls for the implementation of the necessary measures to guarantee decent working conditions for scientific workers in the EU, making Europe more internationally attractive to researchers, counteracting the exodus of specialists and achieving excellence in Europe;

The cancellation of funding programs such as Research Tools and Instruments Grants Program and the major resources support by NSERC at the federal level and the Ontario Research Fund - Research Excellence Program at the provincial level are serious blows, as it will significantly stall the research program progress in the nanotechnology domain and impede the capacity to innovate.
L'annulation de programmes de financement comme le Programme de subventions d'outils et d'instruments de recherche et de grandes sources de soutien comme le CRSNG au niveau fédéral, et le Programme d'excellence en recherche du Fonds pour la recherche en Ontario au niveau provincial sont des coups durs qui freineront grandement l'élan du programme de recherche en nanotechnologie et nuiront à la capacité d'innover.
