The recent occurrence of a large and unexpected bloom of the algae chrysochromulina polylepsis along the coast of Denmark, Norway, Sweden and F.R. Germany and the catastrophic consequences it has had on fisheries and maricultures have drawn attention to the potential danger of North Sea eutrophication and to the unpreparedness of European countries in taking measures to avoid the re-occurrence of such incidents in the future.
