8. Urges the Vice-President/High Representative, the European External Action Service and the Member States to step up their efforts to address slavery in Mauritania, specifically by ensuring a clear and workable foreign affairs and human rights policy which is in line with the EU strategic framework on human rights and democracy, and by promoting a human rights dimension as part of the EU’s Sahel strategy and in dialogues with the Mauritanian Government, including in the context of formal bilateral agreements;
8. exhorte la vice-présidente / haute représentante, le SEAE et les États membres à accroître les efforts consentis pour éliminer l'esclavage en Mauritanie, notamment en veillant à définir une politique claire et praticable en matière d'affaires étrangères et de droits de l'homme, dans le respect du cadre stratégique de l'Union en matière de droits de l'homme et de démocratie, et en mettant en avant le volet «droits de l'homme» de la stratégie dans la région du Sahel, ainsi que dans le contexte du dialogue avec le gouvernement mauritanien, y compris dans le cadre d'accords bilatéraux formels;

3. Calls for full respect for the constitutional legality of the powers of the Mauritanian President and parliament, implying that the mechanisms for cohabitation between President and parliament and for the balance between executive and legislature need to be adjusted on a basis of respect and within the framework of the constitution, which can be amended only in the interests of greater stability if such amendment is effected in line with the provisions of the constitution and following a large-scale debate including all political forces;
