Coming from Madeira as I do, a region in which tourism is one of the main factors in its sustainable growth, it stands to reason that I support the report, and I do primarily for the following reasons: firstly, because of the importance of tourism, at European, national and regional level, and its contribution towards economic growth, job creation and technological innovation, which in turn represents a contribution towards fulfilling the aims of the Lisbon Strategy; secondly, the development potential that it offers regions with economic difficulties and specific geographical characteristics, such as the outermost regions; thirdly, the contribution made by EU and Community measures – supporting, coordinating and complementing the actions of Member States – towards the development of the tourism sector; fourthly, still in this context, the EU’s incentive to set up the most effective structures and provide the appropriate financial resources; fifthly, the role of tourism in environmental protection, in regional planning and in preserving and revitalising cultural values, traditions, customs and natural and artistic heritage; and lastly, security concerns and the protection of the rights of the tourist as consumer.

The organisation of national health systems, the funding details and the types of care and treatment on offer are the responsibility of the individual Member States of the European Union and are characterised by profound and long-standing differences; nevertheless, it is obvious that the exchange of information and knowledge is bound to have a positive impact on the quest for appropriate responses to the new demands of national health systems.
L'organisation des systèmes de soins nationaux, les modalités de financement, le type d'aide et de soins offerts qui relèvent de la compétence des différents États membres de l'Union européenne, se caractérisent par des différences profondes et historiques; malgré tout, il est évident que l'échange d'informations et de connaissances ne pourra qu'avoir un impact positif pour l'élaboration de réponses adaptées aux nouvelles exigences des systèmes de soins nationaux.

Pending organization of the inspections referred to in the first subparagraph, national rules applicable to inspection in third countries shall continue to apply, subject to notification, through the Standing Veterinary Committee, of any failure to comply with the guarantees offered in accordance with paragraph 3 found during these inspections.
