– Mr President, before I start, I find it quite amazing that first an Irishwoman says that Ireland has got absolutely nothing out of the European Union, and then someone from Northern Ireland said that trade policy has nothing to do with democracy.

– (FR) Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, I must begin by highlighting the excellent results that have been achieved through PEACE I and PEACE II, most particularly for the beneficiaries of those programmes in Ireland – in Northern Ireland – to whom both dignity and hope have now been restored. That said, I should like to make two particular points, Commissioner, on which I hope you can obtain genuinely successful outcomes.

– Is the Minister aware that even the authors of this report acknowledge that levels are so low as to be insignificant to health; that levels are a thousand times less than other radioactive substances naturally present in teeth; that most of the highest results were recorded over 250 miles from Sellafield; that this material is more likely to be fallout from weapons testing, which has been present throughout the Northern Hemisphere for some years; that respected scientific and academic opinion in Northern Ireland – for which I was the minister responsible for a couple of years – as well as in his own country, contradicts many of the assertions of the Irish anti-Sellafield lobby; and that when all is said and done, this is little more than political scaremongering designed to wreck thousands of the jobs of my constituents in north-west England and to damage the livelihoods of those many communities dependent upon this vital and valuable recycling operation?
- (EN) Le ministre sait-il que les auteurs du rapport eux-mêmes reconnaissent que les niveaux sont à ce point insignifiants qu’ils ne représentent aucun danger pour la santé, qu’ils sont mille fois inférieurs aux autres substances radioactives naturellement présentes dans les dents, que la plupart des résultats les plus élevés ont été enregistrés à plus de 250 miles de Sellafield, que ces substances sont plus probablement des retombées provenant d’expériences en matière d’armement, réalisées dans l’hémisphère nord depuis plusieurs années, que des avis scientifiques et universitaires respectés d’Irlande du Nord - dont j’étais le ministre responsable il y a quelques années - et de son pays contredisent nombre des affirmations du lobby irlandais anti-Sellafield et qu’en fin de compte, tout ceci se résume à de l’alarmisme politique visant à détruire des milliers d’emplois de mes électeurs du nord-ouest de l’Angleterre et à affecter les moyens de subsistance des nombreuses communautés dépendant de ces opérations de recyclage vitales et précieuses?

Having regard to the request by the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, by its letters to the President of the Council of 20 May 1999, 9 July 1999 and 6 October 1999, to participate in certain provisions of the Schengen acquis, as specified in the said letters,

As I have said all the Northern Ireland parties are united on this issue and those responsible for this cod quota regulation should reconsider this decision which can only spell not conservation for the fish but ruination to Northern Ireland fisheries which will affect all the fisheries of this Union.
Comme je l'ai dit, tous les partis d'Irlande du Nord s'accordent sur cette question et les personnes responsables de ce règlement sur les quotas de cabillaud devraient reconsidérer cette décision dont la conséquence ne peut être que la ruine de l'industrie de la pêche en Irlande du Nord et non la conservation des poissons, ce qui touchera toutes les industries de pêche de cette Union.
