The European Union is now in the fourth decade of its existence and has, especially since the entry into force of the Single European Act and the Maastricht Treaty, come a long way from being an organization focused largely on securing freedom of trade to a unique international organization whose laws influence almost every aspect of its citizens' lives.

In my opening remarks, I will touch briefly on the following: first, Canada's participation in the work of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, which is a global international organization whose objective is to develop international treaties to address cross-border issues in many areas of private law, including family law.
