The West needs to develop a deeper understanding of the religious and philosophical assumptions underlying other civilizations, and the way other nations see their interests, to identify what we have in common. But a word of warning: religious and cultural fundamentalism can only gain ground by exploiting the problems of today's world - underdevelopment, unemployment, flagrant inequality, poverty.
