The OMC has been considered by the Lisbon European Council as a mechanism for coordinating and taking forward work in the fields of social inclusion and pensions, which has allowed progress to be made in these areas.

The September 2002 Communication proposed that there would be a reflection by the Commission, "in the coming months, on how to streamline the open process of coordination in the social protection field - currently covering social inclusion and pensions - and how to link it to the new streamlined approach".

(6) The Commission Communication "Strengthening the social dimension of the Lisbon strategy: streamlining open coordination in the field of social protection" proposed that the open method of coordination for pensions should be pursued after 2006 within a streamlined framework, on the basis of an evaluation of work undertaken in the different processes in the social protection domain, including that of pensions.
