As one who has spent a lifetime living and studying Canadian government, from opposition benches, as a political staffer, as a senior public servant and as a cabinet minister, his observations and analyses are deserving of very special attention.

The role of the political staffer is to give the minister political advice, to make the trains run on time in the minister's office, to handle the ministers' relationships with caucus, cabinet colleagues, the media and with their constituencies and to ensure that there is plenty of time and opportunity for the minister to carry on their relationship with the senior ranks of the public service.
