Ladies and gentlemen, I think that the European Union"s priority in sport today is not to punish a Member Nation which has managed successfully to organise an event like this, but is rather, as Romano Prodi said yesterday, to engage in a real pan-European battle against doping, and this means refusing to allow the unique power of money to kill off the beauty and the very spirit of sport.
Mesdames et Messieurs, aujourd'hui je crois que la priorité, pour l'Union européenne, en matière de sport, ce n'est pas de sanctionner un pays membre qui a réussi à organiser avec succès un tel événement, c'est plutôt, comme l'a dit Romano Prodi hier, d'engager une véritable lutte européenne contre le dopage, par exemple, c'est-à-dire de refuser que la seule logique de l'argent finisse par tuer la beauté et l'esprit même du sport.
