8. Considers that the Structural Funds and the Rechar, Resider and Adapt Community initiatives already play an important role in assisting the redevelopment of areas dependent on the coal and steel industries and, in this context, recalls its request for extra budget funding for the Rechar II Community initiative up to 1999;

To ensure concentration and maximum impact, RECHAR assistance is targeted on those areas that are significantly dependent on coal-mining activities or were in the recent past.
Pour assurer une aide ciblée et un résultat optimal, RECHAR vise les régions qui sont ou étaient récemment encore fortement tributaires des activités charbonnières.

- 2 - Total ERDF and ESF assistance over the period 1990-93 in the coalmining areas eligible for assistance under the RECHAR programme will be of the order of ECU 300 000.

The schemes contained in the RECHAR programme will strengthen and concentrate the Community's assistance in an employment area which has special problems connected with the closure, in the short and medium terms, of the mines constituting the main activity of this conurbation.
