Following an application from McNeil Nutritionals and Raisio Nutrition Ltd, submitted pursuant to Article 14(1)(a) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006, the Authority was required to deliver an opinion on a health claim related to the consumption of 2 g/day of plant stanols (as plant stanol esters) as part of a diet low in saturated fat and a two-fold greater reduction in blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations compared to the consumption of a diet low in saturated fat alone (Question No EFSA-Q-2012-00915) (10).

The claim proposed by the applicant was worded as follows: ‘Danacol® reduces LDL-cholesterol by 10 % in 3 weeks, and the reduction is maintained with daily consumption.

Vegetable oils/fats have a cholesterol level of less than 5mg cholesterol/100g, where animal fats have a cholesterol content of about 300mg/100g. Substitution of 20g vegetable fat for 20g animal fat lowers the cholesterol intake with 50 to 60 mg/day, i.e., a 20-25% reduction, which also substantially lowers the plasma total and LDL cholesterol.
Les huiles et les graisses végétales ont un niveau de cholestérol inférieur à 5 mg par 100 g, alors que les graisses animales ont une teneur en cholestérol d'environ 300 mg/100 g.
