So, for example, it will remain for Member States alone to take decisions on questions such as whether to allow selective admission to schools, or prohibit or allow the wearing or display of religious symbols in schools, whether to recognise same-sex marriages, and the nature of any relationship between organised religion and the state.

Such measures may permit organisations of persons of a particular religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation where their main object is the promotion of the special needs of those persons.

(o) Support for and engagement with a broad range of civil society organisations, including human rights organisations and religious and belief-based groups, while developing and implementing the Guidelines, will be of crucial importance for the promotion and protection of freedom of religion or belief, and therefore the human rights focal points in the EU delegations should maintain regular contacts with these organisations in order to be able to identify as soon as possible problems arising in the area of freedom of religion or belief in their respective countries;

Respects the sensitivities that exist in a country where the large majority are Sunni Muslims, but reminds Turkey of the important cultural and historic heritage handed down to it for safe-keeping by the multicultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious Ottoman Empire; deplores the absence of progress in the area of freedom of religion since Parliament's resolution of 28 September 2005; emphasises that the freedom of citizens to practise whichever religion or be part of whichever denomination they choose must extend to affording them similar legal and administrative opportunities to practise their religion, organise their communities, hold and administer community assets and train their clergy;
31. respecte les sensibilités qui existent dans un pays dont la grande majorité des habitants sont des musulmans sunnites mais rappelle à la Turquie l'important héritage culturel et historique qu'elle a reçu en héritage de l'Empire ottoman, multiculturel, multiethnique et multireligieux; déplore l'absence de progrès en matière de liberté religieuse depuis sa résolution du 28 septembre 2005 précitée; souligne que la liberté des citoyens de pratiquer toute religion ou d'appartenir à la confession qu'ils choisissent doit couvrir les possibilités juridiques et administratives égales de pratiquer leur religion, organiser leurs communautés, posséder et gérer des biens communs et former leur clergé;

Deplores the absence of progress in the area of freedom of religion since Parliament's last report; emphasises that the freedom of citizens to practise whichever religion or be part of whichever denomination they choose must extend to affording them similar legal and administrative opportunities to practise their religion, organise their communities, hold and administer community assets and train their clergy;

2. Member States may maintain national legislation in force at the date of adoption of this Directive or provide for future legislation incorporating national practices existing at the date of adoption of this Directive pursuant to which, in the case of occupational activities within churches and other public or private organisations the ethos of which is based on religion or belief, a difference of treatment based on a person's religion or belief shall not constitute discrimination where, by reason of the nature of these activities or of the context in which they are carried out, a person's religion or belief constitute a genuine, legitimate and justified occupational requirement, having regard to the organisation's ethos.
2. (26) The prohibition of discrimination should be without prejudice to the maintenance or adoption of measures intended to prevent or compensate for disadvantages suffered by a group of persons of a particular religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation, and such measures may permit organisations of persons of a particular religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation where their main object is the promotion of the special needs of those persons.
(26) L'interdiction de la discrimination doit se faire sans préjudice du maintien ou de l'adoption de mesures destinées à prévenir ou à compenser des désavantages chez un groupe de personnes d'une religion ou de convictions, d'un handicap, d'un âge ou d'une orientation sexuelle donnés, et ces mesures peuvent autoriser l'existence d'organisations de personnes d'une religion ou de convictions, d'un handicap, d'un âge ou d'une orientation sexuelle donnés lorsque leur objet principal est la promotion des besoins spécifiques de ces personnes.
