The EU-LAC Summit process is key to implementing the Strategic Partnership. It facilitates dialogue at the highest level, underscores the special nature of the relationship and fuels the bi-regional agenda. The most recent Summit in Lima in 2008 was a chance to discuss positions on strategic topics that are high on the bi-regional and international agenda, such as poverty and climate change. The same trend is noticeable at other high-level bi-regional meetings, such as the EU-Rio Group Ministerial Meeting that took place in Prague (May 2009) and focused on the economic and financial crisis, renewable energy and energy security.
C’est autour du sommet UE-ALC que s’articule la mise en œuvre du partenariat stratégique. Il facilite le dialogue au niveau le plus élevé, souligne la nature particulière de la relation et alimente le programme birégional. Le tout dernier sommet, qui s'est tenu à Lima en 2008, a permis de débattre des positions sur des sujets stratégiques qui figurent en bonne place sur le programme birégional et international, tels que la pauvreté et le changement climatique. It seeks synergy with other institutionalised political dialogues to which the EU or its Member States are party (e.g. the EU-Rio Group Ministerial Meetings and the Ibero-American Summits). This should help boost the EU-Latin America alliance.

To meet this responsibility, the EU and other signatories of the 1992 United Nations' "Rio declaration" committed themselves, at the 19th Special Session of the United Nations' General Assembly in 1997, to draw up strategies for sustainable development in time for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. This strategy forms part of the EU preparations for that summit.

Building on a collaborative process with international partners in 2018, the European Union and Germany will organise the first meeting in 2019. €1.5 million to analyse ecosystems and economic activity on the mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Rio Grande Rise, in order to support the definition of a coherent set of Areas of Particular Environmental Interest. Its intention to support the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean in establishing a Fishing Restricted Area (FRA) of at least 2,700 km² to protect demersal stocks in the habitat recognised as essential nursery and spawning ground for a number of marine species outside territorial waters of Italy and Croatia of the Jabuka/Pomo Pit area of the Adriatic Sea.
S'appuyant sur le processus de collaboration qui sera mené avec des partenaires internationaux en 2018, l'Union européenne et l'Allemagne organiseront la première réunion en 2019; l'octroi de 1,5 million d'euros pour analyser les écosystèmes et l'activité économique sur la dorsale médio-atlantique et la dorsale Rio Grande, afin de contribuer à définir un ensemble cohérent de «zones d'intérêt environnemental particulier»; son intention d'aider la Commission générale des pêches pour la Méditerranée à établir une zone de pêche restreinte d'au moins 2 700 km pour protéger les stocks démersaux dans un habitat reconnu comme étant une zone essentielle d'alevinage et de frai pour un certain nombre d'espèces marines, situé en dehors des eaux territoriales de l'Italie et de la Croatie, dans la zone du bassin de Jabuka/Pomo en mer Adriatique.

Following the Rio meeting, consultations will be held in Geneva next month to collect views on the outcome of Rio and the preparation for the next meeting in New Delhi.
