The first federal election in the new Dominion of Canada was held in August and returned the Conservatives under Sir John A. Macdonald (he was knighted on 1 July, Dominion Day), who became the first Prime Minister (Macdonald was the driving force behind the British North America Act). He served three terms as Prime Minister, and died while in office in 1891.
