Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli added that: "the shortage of radio-isotopes needed for medical procedures as well as the need to improve patient and health professionals protection against accidental or unintended exposures in radio therapy, are important objectives of public health policy.

Among other recommendations, our working group proposed that the Government of Canada: secure a " made in Canada" solution for the supply of isotopes, particularly molybdenum and technetium 99m by expeditiously commissioning the MAPLE 1 and 2 reactors; work with its international partners to review global capacity to produce medical isotopes, encourage the development of international protocols and remove current barriers or obstacles to international movement of radio isotopes during periods of shortages; actively engage in developing and approving other medical isotope technologies, such as positron emission tomography.
Au chapitre des recommandations, notre groupe de travail a proposé que le gouvernement: sécurise une solution canadienne afin de garantir l'approvisionnement d'isotopes, particulièrement le molybdène et le technétium 99, en mettant en service sans tarder les réacteurs MAPLE 1 et MAPLE 2; collabore avec des partenaires internationaux à l'examen de la capacité mondiale de production d'isotopes, mais aussi à la promotion de l'élaboration de protocoles internationaux et à l'élimination des obstacles au transport mondial des radio-isotopes en période de pénurie; entreprenne activement le développement et la commercialisation d'autres isotopes médicaux, en particulier les émetteurs de positrons.
