The peoples of what was then the Soviet Union played a decisive part in bringing this victory about, and they also had to pay an enormous price; all these things we ought to properly appreciate and, of course, reflect upon them, and it is for that reason that I thoroughly endorse what has been said about the events in Tallinn by the head of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Jerusalem, in these words, which I found very moving:
Les peuples de ce qui constituait alors l’Union soviétique ont joué un rôle décisif dans cette victoire et lui ont payé un lourd tribut. Il convient d’apprécier ces faits à leur juste valeur et, naturellement, de réfléchir à ce qu’ils représentent. C’est pourquoi j’approuve totalement les déclarations formulées par le directeur du Centre Simon Wiesenthal à Jérusalem suite aux événements survenus à Tallinn. Il a prononcé ces paroles, qui me vont droit au cœur:
