For these reasons, Directive 2002/21/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 March 2002 on a common regulatory framework for electronic communications networks and services enables the Commission, where necessary, to request European standardisation organisations to draw up standards, to establish and publish in the Official Journal of the European Union a list of standards or specifications with the view to encourage their use, or to make their implementation compulsory, or to remove standards or specifications from that list.
