A story told by the French MEP Jean-Louis Bourlanges in his book published in 1992 is very revealing here: he says that a Community directive which had been denounced in his country as a scandal and an infringement of national sovereignty in an area as vital as French cheese-making (!) had in fact been promoted and requested by the French Government, which thought it necessary to have European protection for its cheese industry.
L'anecdote racontée par l'eurodéputé français Jean-Louis Bourlanges dans son livre publié en 1992 est très révélatrice à cet égard: l'auteur explique en effet qu'une directive communautaire qui avait été dénoncée dans son pays comme un scandale et comme un attentat à la souveraineté nationale, dans une matière aussi importante que la fabrication française de fromages, avait été en réalité promue et réclamée par le gouvernement français, qui jugeait la protection européenne nécessaire pour défendre son industrie fromagère.
