The mobility of students will promote understanding between different cultures and improve knowledge of languages; it will prepare citizens to be able to work within a global society; it will create an employment exchange within each institution – this is very important since it will help young people to find their first job, which is always so difficult to do; it will also put the European Union on the map in terms of advanced studies, because certain other countries were ahead of us in this respect.

(11) The programme provides for the establishment of an "Erasmus Mundus Masters Course" which will enable students to travel round Europe attending several different universities. This new European dimension to higher education should be taken into account in the review of existing programmes such as Socrates (Erasmus), in order that adequate measures may be taken to promote access to this programme for European students.

(11c) The European Council of Lisbon of 23 and 24 March 2000 declared its support for mobility as an essential feature of the new knowledge society and in promoting life-long learning. It called on the Member States, the Council and the Commission to take the necessary steps to foster the mobility of students, teachers and training staff, in particular by removing obstacles, through greater transparency in the recognition of qualifications and periods of study and training and through specific measures to remove obstacles to the mobility of teachers by 2002, and to develop a common European format for curricula vitae to facilitate mobility by helping the assessment, both by education and training establishments and by employers, of knowledge acquired. The European Council also called on the Council and the Commission to promote the creation of a Europe-wide database on jobs and learning opportunities to facilitate mobility, while making it easier to find jobs and overcome the skills shortage.
